The Godfather of Artificial Intelligence, Why did Hinton resign from Google?
You need to remember that Geoffrey Hinton announced his resignation from Google in May last year. At the time, he told the BBC that some of the risks posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots were “pretty scary“.
According to the Hinton
As far as I understand, I can say that currently, they are not smarter than us, but I think they may be ( smarter than us ) too soon.
He said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great and immerse potential for humanity, but the current pace of development without clear rules and boundaries is troubling in future.
Announcing his departure from Google in a statement sent to The New York Times, Hinton said he now regrets his actions because he fears some kind of “wrong elements” will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to do very “bad things” in future.
Hinton, a computer scientist, told the BBC that Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots could soon surpass the information level of the human brain.
“What we are seeing right now is that GPT-4 outperforms the knowledge any one person has,” he said. It ( artificial intelligence technology ) is not that far ahead in terms of providing clarity, but it can do so to some extent. ’
And given its rate of growth, we expect things to improve very innovative way and quickly. So we need to be concerned about that.”
In the New York Times article, Dr. Hinton referred to ‘bad actors‘ who would try to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for ‘bad things‘.
When asked about it by the BBC, he replied, “It’s just the worst case scenario, a nightmare scenario.”
“For example, you could imagine a bad guy like (Russian President Vladimir Putin ) using Artificial Intelligence (AI) robots to achieve his goals.”
The scientist warned that this might lead to sub goals such as ‘I need to get more power.’
Chatbots will soon be smarter than us, The Godfather of Artificial Intelligence resigns from Google
“I have come to the main conclusion that the kind of intelligence we’re try to developing is very different from the intelligence we have,” Hinton says.
We all have a natural system and that’s a digital (artificial) system but depends on human and the biggest difference is that with digital systems you have many copies of it, the same model of the world,” he says. ’
All these copies can learn little bit separately but they can share their knowledge instantly. So it’s like you have 10,000 people and whenever one person learns something, everyone else automatically learns, and so these chatbots can learn a lot more than any one person.”
Dr. Hinton also said there were several other reasons for leaving his job.
One is that I am 75 years old. So now it’s time to retire.
Second, I actually want to say some good things about Google, and those things would be more credible if I didn’t work for Google.
He emphasized that he did not want to criticize Google and that the technology giant had been “very responsible“.
“We are committed to responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) practices,” Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist, said in a statement. We are trying to understand the threats that are coming and are also boldly innovating.
